Explore the treasure that is Barcelona

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is a cultural and lively city which has become one of the most attractive city destinations in Europe. The Catalans have long thought themselves a separate region from the rest of Spain and its independent spirit is alive and well in Barcelona. An artistic paradise and architectural wonder, it also has a very contemporary scene with its tapas bars and nightclubs. Narrow streets and winding alleyways are great for exploring before the city opens up to the splendour of its port whilst Gaudi’s unfinished La Sagrada Família is undoubtedly its most famous landmark. Seven beaches also grace the outskirts of the city for when it’s time to relax and enjoy the sun.

What to do in Barcelona

When you're not driving your luxury car rental in Barcelona there is no shortage of things to see and do in this wonderful city. La Sagrada Família work on Gaudi’s design began in 1882 and it is said to be due for completion in 2026. You can admire the beautiful building from the outside but if you decide to look inside, book tickets online to avoid the queues, it attracts around 2.8 million visitors a year.

Casa Milà another Gaudi must-see, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered one of Gaudí’s greatest achievements. La Rambla is the pedestrian boulevard that stretches from Plaça Catalunya to the old port and is always packed with tourists and buskers.

Park Güell, full of mosaics, became a public park in 1926 and is where Gaudi let his imagination run riot as he tried his hand at landscape gardening. You will need to pay to see the main attractions like the Dragon Stairway and Hypostyle Room. The park attracts around 4 million visitors a year, most of them tourists. Castell de Montjuïc is found at the top of Montjuïc Mountain and was once a military prison. Now the 17th-century building makes for a peaceful place to take a walk, with views of the harbour below.

Enjoy a Coffee

Barri Gòtic (the Gothic Quarter) is a labyrinth of medieval streets. Enjoy getting lost or take a guide who will show you around. Palau de la Música Catalana was designed by one Gaudí’s contemporaries Puig i Cadafalch and his concert hall is worth a visit, enjoy a coffee here to admire the splendour.

Camp Nou football fans will definitely want to visit the museum and take the self-guided tour of this massive football stadium, home to the legendary Barcelona FC. The Museu Picasso is housed in five medieval stone mansions, the setting is as attractive as the collection itself.

Getting around Barcelona

You will want your luxury hire car handy so you can whisk yourself away down the coast at a moment’s notice. Taking to the open road in the driving seat of your luxury saloon such as an Audi A8, four-wheel drive BMW X6 or Jaguar XKRS sports car, gives you the chance to see more of this part of northern Spain. However, whilst in Barcelona, you will probably choose to leave your luxury car rental at the hotel. Most of the city can be done on foot but its metro system is efficient and easy to use when you want to reach one part of the city quickly. Although, meandering through Barcelona’s streets is part of its charm. For trips slightly further afield, Salou is 66 miles away or an hour’s driving and is one of the best known coastal towns on the Costa Dorada, its golden sands and shallow waters make it ideal for families with young children.

If your children are older or you’re just young at heart, there’s Spain’s premier theme park PortAventura. Just a few miles further along the coast is Cambrils with its cobbled streets. It retains all the charm of a small fishing village and is a world apart from lively Salou. Enjoy a peaceful drink on the quayside, visit here for a glimpse into the Spain of yesteryear although with 9 km, around 6 miles, of sandy beaches, it attracts its fair share of sun worshipers. Montserrat is only 40 km or 30 miles inland from Barcelona. The beautiful geological formation of several peaks complete with a Benedictine monk mountain retreat, offers some of the most stunning views of Catalonia.
