New luxury Rolls Royce Wraith convertible named ‘Dawn’

The convertible version of the Rolls Royce Wraith coupe is upon us and will be known as the ‘Dawn’.

So for the luxury car company it’s the dawn of a new day (we couldn’t resist the pun!). The name for the new drop top was clarified in sunny Los Angeles at a networking event comprising of 130 Rolls Royce dealers.

The name isn’t so much new, as more of a resurrected name from the past. 1949 saw the first Rolls dubbed the Dawn and the Silver Dawn was the first ever Rolls Royce vehicle to utilise a factory-built shell.

Rolls-Royce boss Torsten Müller-Ötvös eloquently says:

“Dawn is a beautiful new open-top motor car with a name that suggests the fresh opportunities that every new day holds – an awakening, an opening up of one’s senses and a burst of sunshine. It will be the most social of super-luxury motor cars for those beautiful people who wish to bathe in the sunlight of the world’s social hotspots.”

Rolls Royce Dawn, The Wraith Convertible’s Performance

Under the hood, we’re expecting similarities to the Wraith (the Dawn had been provisionally known as the Wraith Drophead). The two cars will more than likely share the same 624bhp, twin-turbocharged 6.6 litre V12 engine.

This won’t be a hard top roof, but a folding cloth convertible. When released we expect it to be the perfect rival to the Bentley Continental GT Convertible and the Mercedes S-Class Cabriolet.

The Dawn represents the continuing investment that BMW have been ploughing into the luxury car organisation since 2003, when they launched the Phantom.

Prices are set to start at around 250K; but don’t worry, isuperdrive is here and will be offering the Dawn for rental in Europe. So you don’t need to be a rock-star or sultan to wrap your hands round its steering wheel and burn rubber.

Before you start frantically clicking to get to our enquiry page in an attempt to rent this opulent car this summer; hold your horses. This beautiful machine will not be released until 2016.
